2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 5/6
Yesterday we drove to Hungry Horse which is just outside the West entrance to Glacier National Park. Most of the drive was along Flat Lake, which has similar qualities to Lake Tahoe. Once we arrived at Hungry Horse, we discovered that finding great campsites over the Labor Day weekend was going to be a problem. So we changed our original plan of relocating to Two Medicine on the East side of the park, and instead use our campsite in Hungry Horse as our base to explore the park.
This is Huckleberry country. Fresh Huckleberries are in season, we were on the hunt for fresh Huckleberry pie, jam, preserves, ice cream, etc. They ARE delicious!
On our first day inside Glacier National Park, we navigated the 50-mile Going-To-The-Sun Road from the West entrance, to the St. Mary entrance on the East side. It started along Lake McDonald, then climbed up to the highest point at Logan Pass, before taking the very scenic descent towards the East. The road is definitely a driving challenge – a very narrow, winding road with granite walls on one side, and a very low rock fence on the other as our only protection from a two thousand foot drop-off. This national park is truly the Alps of the United States. We could not find a parking spot at the Logan Pass ranger station, so we drove on with the intent of returning on another day.
Describing the scenery can best be accomplished with photos. Hence I’ve decided to include more photos than I would under normal posts.
We’ll save some scenic walks for the next few days. Roselie and I had visited the park twice over the last few years and had spent about 14 days enjoying the park. Each time, we felt that we could easily spend twice the amount of time and still miss many things.
