2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 36 – Exploring Depoe Bay
Since we could not stay at Depoe Bay, we drove back up the coast to explore the self-proclaimed ‘smallest harbor in the world’. It certainly is small. It would only hold a few dozen boats, but no sailboats. To enter the harbor, a powerboat must come into a very narrow, 20-foot channel with sufficient speed to overcome the strong current. Then half way thru the channel, it must jog left and then right – UGH.

This little village offers very little to see or do. There is a whale watching center and a pod of gray whales that hang out nearby for everyone’s enjoyment. There is enough activity to make it fun to watch, but a little bit of a challenge to capture in a photo.
There she blows!
There were at least three salt-water taffy stores, making the confectionary and chocolate as we watched. So, it demanded we taste a lot – for quality control purposes, of course. Lunch turned into a sugar-high.
The evening brought a beautiful sunset. We walked over the sand dunes and watched the sun go down, looking for that elusive green flash just as it disappears below the horizon. At times, experiencing the serenity of sitting on a piece of drift wood on the beach and listing and watching the waves makes one’s soul soar – spiritually regenerating.
