2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 27/28 – Port Angeles
We traveled from Mt. Rainier to Port Angeles, which is located on the northern coast of the peninsula along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Olympic National Park covers most of the peninsula. After all these weeks in the natural wilderness, we had to adjust to the civilized wilderness of freeways and traffic as we passed around the Tacoma and Seattle areas.
Finding a campsite near Port Angeles became a challenge since quality parks were nowhere to be found. Several campgrounds inside the Olympic Park were closed when they removed two dams over the last ten years. Nice Olympic Park campsites can be found on the other side of the Park – but over a hundred miles away. We finally found a campsite just outside Port Angeles.

The following day was all about rain. Clouds covered Mt. Olympus and the surrounding terrain. The choices of what we could do were limited to visiting the Park’s Visitors Center, and exploring the town. Quite frankly, Port Angeles is far from charming and doesn’t have much to see or do. It is quit crusty. Our decision to stay here was solely based on catching the ferry to Victoria the next day.
