Day 2

2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 2

Today’s destination was Angel Lake National Park, just outside Wells, Nevada, where we met up with Carmine and RoseMarie. The drive across the Nevada desert was serene and beautiful, with long, long, long stretches of road.

Today’s operative word:  EARTHQUAKE

We spent most of the drive checking out the impact of the 6.1 earthquake earlier this morning, centered in Napa California. At this time we don’t think we experienced any damage at our home.  Our thoughts and best wishes are with those that suffered damage….we still remember coming home after the ’89 earthquake to all the damage.

Arriving at our Angel Creek campground mid-afternoon, we enjoyed the beauty and solitude of the area. Nestled in the mountains, it has become one of our favorite stop-over locations.  Nevada has the largest number of mountain peaks of any U.S. state.

HOWEVER, we experienced our own ‘sympathy’ quake tonight.  Our camp site, while beautiful, required us to raise the back of the trailer by about 5 inches in order  to level it.  Someone [still trying to identify the culprit] did an incomplete job of locking the wheels in place.  So as we’re getting ready for the night, the movements inside caused the wheels to slip off the leveling blocks. The trailer slipped off the blocks and proceeded to skid downhill about 2 feet – probably a 4.0 quake which lasted about 5 seconds.  WOW!

NOTE TO SELF:  Don’t take shortcuts.  Carmine has volunteered to be the Safety Engineer for the duration of this trip and to check my trailer set-up.
