Day 17 – Lake Louise

2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 17 – Snow/Rain in Lake Louise

It started raining last night at about 11 PM and it hasn’t stopped. Late morning the rain changed to snow. It has been snowing all day and it is beginning to accumulate on the non-pavement areas.

Despite the weather, we decided to take a drive up to Moraine Lake. It was literally driving in the clouds. Once we arrived, armed with our foul weather gear and an umbrella, we set off to take a few pictures. The good news is that more than half the crowds were gone. We saw part of the lake but most of it, as well as the surrounding mountains, were shrouded in clouds. It was beautiful and serene with the raindrops hitting the mirror-like lake.

Not discouraged, we headed to Lake Louise and hoped better weather would prevail – or not! Visibility was only about 200 feet, so we could not see the beauty of the setting. The Fairmont Chateau was barely visible. We plan to come back later in the afternoon assuming weather conditions improve.

Well, they didn’t improve. Instead,  we went to the a local hostel for lunch and some WIFI time. These remote areas are generally void of WIFI and Mobile Phone service. My blog postings are running about 5 days behind. My last successful posting was accomplished at the hostel , but it took me three hours for one post.   My contribution to the problem rests with my decision to include photos. Even though I reduced the size of each photo, they still average three megabits each.  I considered not including photos, but decided not to go down that path.  It doesn’t look like things will improve on the WIFI front until we get into the Seattle area.

Given the weather, we thought about alternatives if we could not leave as planned tomorrow morning. Since Marcel and Sandi are moving to lower altitudes, they decided to take a chance and leave in the morning.  The rest of us will review the conditions in the morning and make our decisions at that time.  We need to go over two mountain passes of 5,500 feet or more before we reach our next destination in British Columbia.
