Day 13 – On-the-move to Banff

2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 13

Today is an on-the-move day as we leave Waterton [beautiful, crystal clear weather] for Banff/Lake Louise. The Canadian Visitors Center had recommended that we take the long way around Calgary using the loop road. This was a great suggestion. Calgary is very large and spread out. The views were primarily miles and miles of condo/apartment complexes next to each other, that all look-alike. Why all these people? What is driving their economy? It is an oil-based economy. Whenever the price per barrel goes up, Calgary is booming. When the price is down, they tighten their belts and hang on until the next price boom – which is always greater than the prior boom. The extraction of shale oil and proposal to ship it to Texas via the controversial pipeline is driving the current expansion.

Approaching the Canadian Rockies, we learned that Banff and Lake Louise were the two base points of activities and ventures. The original plan was to head directly to Lake Louise and use it as our home base. Instead, we decided to spend two days in Banff and then on to Lake Louise for the rest of our visit.
