2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 10
We traveled from Hungry Horse along the Southern border of Glacier National Park and then headed north to cross into Canada and on to Waterton Lakes National Park – the Canadian portion of Glacier National Park. The scenery was breathtaking, but we fought very strong winds the whole way. Once we arrived at the US/Canadian border we ran into a 45-minute queue to get across. After all the preparation yesterday, the Canadian border guards just wanted to know how long we were staying in Canada, did we have any firearms, and were we the owners of the truck and trailer. That’s it! Nothing about fruit, vegetables, wine, etc.
One of the photos above shows the border marker, and next to it you can see a ‘line’ marking the border. Canada and the USA park departments take turns clearing this line about every 7 years. Clearing seems to have no function other than to show visitors the border between the two countries.
It was a treat to arrive at the main town, greeted by the Prince of Wales lodge sitting grandly on a bluff overlooking Upper Waterton Lake. We are staying in the Townsite campground in Waterton, with beautiful vistas in every direction, and deer throughout. Unfortunately it is very cool [high 40’s] and VERY windy [gusts to 50 miles per hour]. We won’t be cooking or eating outside tonight! Brrrrrrrr!
