2014 Exploring The Northwest – DAY 1
Today, we drove from home to Winnemucca, Nevada covering a total of 430 miles. The drive through the Sierras was beautiful – bright blue sky and crisp, clean air.
As we entered Nevada, we notice a sea of old 1960 and 1970 vintage trailers, cars, trucks, VW minivans, converted delivery vans and school buses, all with boxes, bicycles, wood, and junk strapped to the roof. What’s going on here? The answer was on a sign painted on the side of an old, dilapidated school bus: ‘Burning Man Here We Come’. All were heading to the black desert in northern Nevada for the weeklong Burning Man event – an annual event with more than 50,000 attendees. No money may be exchanged. Consequently everyone brings everything they need to live on for a week. On leaving, everything brought in, including trash, must be carried out. The site has to be left in a pristine condition. It officially starts Monday and continues through the Labor Day Weekend.
We considered changing our trip itinerary slightly and joining this gathering. After all many start-up execs [Google, Facebook, Tesla, Amazon, etc.] have attended over the years. Fortunately, sanity and better judgment prevailed. We drove on.
Tomorrow we leave for Angel Lake near Wells, Nevada.
